An association agreement is a document drafted when a pact is entered into between the European Union and a non European Union country. The main purpose of drafting the agreement is to create a framework in order to provide co operation between both the parties.

There are certain areas covered by the agreement which include development of social, security, political and cultural links.

There is a certain legal section under which the base of the agreement is provided, which is mentioned in the agreement.

The agreement acts as evidence that the European Union has committed to provide human rights, economic or trade reforms in the non European Union country. The agreement also gives the country the permit to access tariff free to most of the European Union markets that deal with industrial goods as well as agricultural products.

The non European Union country also has access to financial and technical assistance of the European Union.
